At Derby Public Schools, we are proud to serve our military community with nearly 13% of our students being military-connected. Military families who choose to live in base housing are assigned to our school district, with one of our nine elementary schools being connected to base housing. We understand the unique needs of your family and child and look forward to assisting you. Our school district works in close partnership with McConnell Air Force Base Leadership and the School Liaison Program Manager to address the needs of military-connected students in the district. This partnership has provided many opportunities for program and service development that eases the impact of students in transition and supports students who are facing difficult challenges unique to military families.

Purple Star District
In April 2023, we were proud to receive the distinction of being named a Purple Star District with all 12 schools meeting the requirements and criteria outlined to achieve this distinction. Derby is one of four districts in the state to have schools recognized. This designation is awarded to military-friendly school districts and schools that have demonstrated a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military, including Active Duty, National Guard or Reserve. A Purple Star School actively supports students as they relocate to new schools due to a parent’s change in duty station. A “Purple Star” signals which schools are the most committed and best equipped to meet the unique needs of children who are military-connected.

• Our school district boundaries cover a total of 50 square miles and consists of 12 total schools: one high school, two middle schools, nine elementary schools (six elementary schools are in Derby, three are in the Wichita city limits).
• Derby Public Schools employs approximately 1,200 certified and classified team members. If you are interested in employment, we have many flexible positions, including substitute positions, that work around a variety of schedules and needs your family may have. Learn more HERE.
• Derby is a place known for its community spirit. We wear green on Fridays to show our school district and Panther (our high school mascot) pride.
