2017-2018 School Year

•November 14 - Derby Public Schools Staff Recognized for Years of Service
Summary: At the November 13 Board of Education meeting, district staff from El Paso Elementary were recognized for Years of Service with Derby Public Schools.

•November 13 - Gage Chiropractic Center Donates Winter Coats to Students

Summary: Gage Chiropractic Center donates 268 coats, and has funds to donate 93 more, to Derby Public Schools during their 12th annual Coats for Kids Drive.

•October 24 - Derby Public Schools Staff Recognized for Years of Service

Summary: At the October 23 Board of Education meeting, district staff from Cooper Elementary were recognized for Years of Service with Derby Public Schools.  

•October 24 - Board of Education Recognizes Individuals with I Make A Difference Award
Summary: At the October 23 Board of Education meeting, one staff member and one volunteer were recognized for their work with Derby Public Schools. 

•October 10 - Derby Public Schools Staff Recognized for Years of Service
Summary: At the October 9 Board of Education meeting, district staff from Tanglewood Elementary were recognized for Years of Service with Derby Public Schools. 

•September 28 - Wineteer Elementary Named 2017 National Blue Ribbon School 
Summary: On September 28,
 Wineteer Elementary was named by the U.S. Secretary of Education as a National Blue Ribbon School for 2017. Wineteer was one of only five schools in the state of Kansas and 342 schools across the nation recognized. 

•September 26 -
Derby Public Schools Staff Recognized for Years of Service
Summary: At the September 25 Board of Education meeting, district staff from the Administrative Center and Carlton Learning Center were recognized for Years of Service with Derby Public Schools.

• September 26 -
Board of Education Recognizes Individuals with I Make A Difference Award
Summary: At the September 25 Board of Education meeting, 4 Derby Public Schools staff members and 4 student volunteers were recognized for their work with the Summer Lunch Program, receiving the I Make A Difference Award.

•September 14 - Derby High School NMSi Grant and AP Results
Summary: Derby Public Schools received a three-year grant from the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSi) in the spring of 2016 in the amount of $1.7 million dollars. 

•September 14 -
Derby Public Schools Students Named 2018 National Merit Semifinalists
Summary: Three Derby High School students were recognized as 2018 National Merit Semifinalists for qualifying scores on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test during their junior year. 

• September 14 -
Derby Public Schools Staff Recognized for Years of Service
Summary: At the September 11 Board of Education meeting, Oaklawn Elementary staff was recognized for Years of Service with Derby Public Schools. 

• July 11 - Experience Driving a School Bus During “Try-It-Out” Days at Panther Stadium
Summary: The Transportation Department at Derby Public Schools is sponsoring two “Try-It-Out” days for persons interested in experiencing driving a bus. The district is currently seeking to fill eight bus driver positions prior to the start of the 2017-2018 school year. The purpose of the “Try-It-Out” days is to provide an opportunity for hands-on exposure to help decide if driving a bus could be the right job for you. Bus driver trainers will be on site to speak with those interested in learning more about what driving a bus entails and will ride with the person while the bus is being operated.  

• July 9 
Derby Public Schools to Survey Community Patrons
Summary: By July 10 phones will be ringing across the Derby Public Schools district as a comprehensive survey of community patron opinion will begin. As the district continues to move forward with a Facilities Master Plan proposal, it is imperative that we have feedback from the community. Due to low attendance and feedback received at community meetings held earlier this year the district has contracted with Patron Insight, a service that helps gather community input.

• June 13 
Derby Public Schools Announces New Director of Communications
Summary: At the June 12 Board of Education meeting Katie Carlson was announced as the new Director of Communications for Derby Public Schools. Carlson is currently the district’s Public Information Assistant and will transition into this new role on July 1. 

• June 6 - Derby Public Schools Announces New Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources
Summary: 
At the May 22 Board of Education meeting Dr. Andy Koenigs was announced as the next Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources for Derby Public Schools. He will begin on July 1 following Heather Bohaty’s move into the role of Superintendent of Schools.
